* Things I don't understand: (1) fine, if you're going to be That Asshole who isn't wearing a mask in NYC and isn't even carrying one Just In Case... why are you wearing latex gloves with your workout gear? (2) If you're going to wear a mask, why is your child under ten not wearing one? Have you not heard about the hundred-plus kids in the city who've come down with something very similar to Kawasaki Disease? (3) Why are you doing The Chinstrap if you aren't going to pull the mask up when people are within six feet of you? That's the whole point of The Chinstrap! There are less uncomfortable ways of virtue-signaling with a mask. 

In other news, today was nine miles of walking, my upstairs neighbor singing for an hour, and the sort of rage that requires a lot of mozzarella. Hell is other people and I say that in Week Nine of a quarantine lockdown. That just got extended another month. 


* I posted this cartoon to tumblr because it spoke deeply to me. It's why I write a story six people are reading instead of watching Disney+ or Netflix. The current chapter threw me down the Wikipedia wormhole (starting here and going...) and I've been delighted. 


* I also posted this to Tumblr and I dare anyone to convince me I'm wrong. Or that I didn't just give a CW executive a good idea. 


* Totally by accident, I went back 100+ pages on my AO3 history and wow, that was a fun blast from the past. It took me back to 2010 and fandoms I dabbled in the reading of but never wrote in. I wound up rereading a ton of stuff I hadn't thought about in a decade. I highly recommend it as an activity.

Some younger children apparently don't tolerate wearing masks very well, and I suppose if the choice is between a screaming temper tantrum with a half pulled off mask and a maskless but calm kid, the latter might be a lesser source of wide droplet spread. And afaik for under two years or so, they are bad not just because you can't explain not to play with the mask yet, but also babies can't breathe enough through them (at least the cloth ones, I don't know whether there are medical grade solutions for immunocompromised small children).

The chinstrap people drive me crazy too.

This is central Queens, the epicenter of the epicenter, and if you haven't acclimated your seven-year-old to a mask after two months, then maybe you deserve your kid getting sick. I'm not talking infants in prams, I'm talking elementary school kids with their own bikes and helmets -- they have helmets for safety but no masks!

Yeah,in such a high risk environment I'd expect parents to be more careful, especially now with these unsettling news about this inflammation syndrome in children.

Here parents generally don't make their children wear masks, but then my city, while it ranks fairly high for the number of infections per capita for Germany, it's not been catastrophic so far, only one out of every 300 or so got sick with Covid-19, and obviously not all at the same time, so the chance that any particular person you come across is infectious is not very high, and right now known new infections are down quite a bit (though unfortunately not enough to get rid of it entirely like New Zealand or similar places). For example I still don't know anybody in RL who had Covid-19 for sure. Of course they've also opened up almost everything again and people are getting ever less careful, so I expect more new cases again.
