SGA: Oblivious by astolat
3 Feb 2026 18:46Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Elizabeth Weir, Carson Beckett, Aiden Ford
Rating: Explicit
Length: 8100
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply
Creator Links: astolat on AO3
Themes: Inept in love, Friends to lovers, First time, Favorite fanworks
Summary: In which Rodney and John fail to pay attention.
Reccer's Notes: For me, this is the ultimate "inept in love" fic. It's clever, very funny, and brilliantly written, as Rodney bounces blithely from assumption to oblivious assumption, with John startled by the sudden sex they're having, but somehow never managing to communicate clearly that Rodney's got it all wrong about them being in a relationship - until it's finally totally clear that they both are. An all-time classic!

This 56-page annual came out alongside the 52-page JLE annual, while JLA and JLE continued their monthly schedule. A new Justice League Quarterly super-sized comic was in the scripting stages. Giffen and Dematteis were writing all of the above. And the premise of this comic is… “Ha ha, wouldn’t it be ridiculous if the Justice League brand were OVEREXTENDED?”
( I mean, imagine Batman or somebody declaring that EVERY hero was a Justice Leaguer! )

Good Omens: The Seduction Malfunction by iamtheenemy
1 Feb 2026 12:56Pairings/Characters: Aziraphale/Crowley
Rating: T
Length: 5437 words
Creator Links: iamtheenemy (Steph)
Theme: Inept in love
Summary: Crowley gets orders to seduce Aziraphale to the dark side. It goes about as well as you might expect.
Reccer's Notes: Crowley gets orders from Hell to seduce Aziraphale, and Crowley can't really bring himself to try, despite some half-hearted attempts. That's the first half of the fic, the second half is the two of them after the almost apocalypse, and it's very sweet, even if Crowley's brain stops functioning a few times.

Round 183: Inept in Love
1 Feb 2026 08:45
Bring out your failboats! Our theme for February is inept in love.
These fools are unlucky in love—whether it's due to inexperience, obliviousness, social anxiety, or their own terrible choices—or are so in love they can't function properly. This trope is sometimes called "Idiots in Love," but as "idiot" is an ableist term, I ask that you don't use it in your recs, and just as there are all kinds of love, this theme is for all kinds of relationships.
The tag for this round is: theme: inept in love
If you're just joining us, be sure to check out our policy on content notes. Content notes aren't required, but they're nice to include in your recs, especially if a fanwork has untagged content that readers may wish to know about in advance.

"A lot of what I do seems extreme in comparison with other comics — which, given that the industry staple is still superheroes, are mostly going to seem that bit more restrained. But compare my work to some of the current stuff in TV or movies, and all of a sudden I’m not quite that far out there." -- Garth Ennis

Absolute Martian Manhunter #7
1 Feb 2026 00:51
We’re celebrating what I think is really interesting about the original character and concept. I’m going back and reading all of the early Silver Age appearances from the first detective stories. I thought there was something with this character that can see into people’s minds, but has a truly alien perspective that even Superman doesn’t possess, that was really powerful and interesting. -- Deniz Camp

Three Sentence Ficathon recs

31 Jan 2026 20:40Then this afternoon I watched the Miracle on Ice documentary on Netflix, which was really good - that team is the reason I became a hockey fan, and specifically a Rangers fan, so they have a lot to answer for! Kidding! I'm kidding. It was lovely to see so many of them in the present, watching them watch their younger selves.
And then after dinner, I watched the s3 premiere of Shrinking, which made me laugh a lot and also tear up. They are all so ridiculous and I love them. And I read it already got renewed for a season 4! So that's good.
I also did the January recs update:
* 16 Heated Rivalry
* 1 The Good Place story and 1 Avatar the Last Airbender/Legend of Korra vid
If you are reading HR fic, there is probably nothing new there for you, since most of those recs came from you all, but maybe there's something new for you to enjoy? I still have so much Batfamily fic open in tabs that I want to get back to reading, and still more HR fic and some Pitt fic open as well. I've just been mostly unable to settle in with any of it, and have instead been slowly continuing my DCC reread, with occasional notes. *hands*

1 Feb 2026 00:41Characters/Pairings: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, Ray Kowalski & Ray Vecchio, Diefenbaker, Buck Frobisher, Maggie McKenzie
Rating: Mature
Length: 26,124 for the main fic, 28,647 for the series
Content Notes: Creator chose not to warn. This has at least a hopeful ending, but the fic is about zombies and Ray kills and eats at least one victim, plus there are some slightly gross descriptions in places. Way less gore etc. than most zombie stories, though.
Creator Links: mizface on AO3
Themes: Crack treated seriously, Friends to lovers, Friendship, Complete AU, Zombies, (Not really) character death, Epistolary fic
Summary: Ray Kowalski thought he had an okay existence: he had a place to call home, didn't have to worry about a job, and nobody bothered him. If it wasn't for the fact that he was a zombie, things would have been pretty good.
Then he met very much alive Benton Fraser, and his whole world was turned upside down.
Reccer's Notes: And the trifecta of cracky fantasy creatures: zombies. This story's based on the movie Warm Bodies, which also takes the cracky zombie premise kind of seriously, in a romantic way. Zombies are usually shown as mindless ravening hordes, but in this story both Rays have been zombified but haven't completely lost themselves. Here, zombies are called "the infected", and both Rays begin to mysteriously improve across the story, regaining more speech and cognitive ability. Apart from the relationship with Fraser that develops - and we also access Fraser's POV from his journal entries - there's a nice friendship between the Rays. There's one major story, followed by a number of short fics adding to the 'verse. A rather lovely and poignant take on zombies, that more seriously explores a possible at least partial recovery from that state, and developing relationships.

SGA: Be Cool by Hth
31 Jan 2026 23:37Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Katie Brown, David Parrish, Elizabeth Weir, Bates
Rating: Explicit
Length: 6499
Content Notes: No AO3 warnings apply
Creator Links: Hth on AO3
Themes: Crack Treated Seriously, First time, Friends to lovers, Humor, In vino veritas
Summary: Rodney toked pot that one time, but it never made him one of the cool kids.
Reccer's Notes: Okay, I'm stretching it a little thin in terms of the prompt, but any excuse to rec this charming, hot, and funny fic. The cracky premise is that Colonel John Sheppard, the military commander, is the drug czar of Atlantis, and Hth actually does sell it, while still keeping Sheppard in character. I'm very fond of "under the influence" stories, and this is lovely, as Sheppard inveigles Rodney to smoke pot with him and Rodney transforms from a pining nerd to being almost as cool as Sheppard. As so often, they've both been secretly attracted to each other for ages, and a bit of disinhibition (hitting Rodney harder as he's less used to it) speeds things along. It's a favourite story of mine with great dialogue, and a very fun read.

Glocal Guardians: JUSTICE LEAGUE EUROPE ANNUAL #1 (JLI 51)
30 Jan 2026 22:18
The Global Guardians have appeared often in JLI stories by now, but only as a memory, an abstract, nostalgia-shrouded ideal from which the devalued, brainwashed reality has fallen. “Bialya Blues” brings back a facsimile of the Guardians as they were, but said facsimile still won’t measure up to the memory.

30 Jan 2026 21:18In other news, I was so sorry to hear Catherine O'Hara died. RIP. What a legend!

I really enjoyed last night's episode of The Pitt. Again, my brain is soup, so I'm not really up for saying much about it, but I did literally yell, "NO!" when the credits rolled. Sometimes I am okay with an episode ending (or at least it feels like it reached a good stopping point) but last night was not one of those times.
This weekend, I will watch the new episode of Shrinking, plus the new episodes of Bridgerton, and possibly I will continue with Pluribus, which I didn't love but kind of want to see why everyone else raves about it. It could click at some point or it could be like Severance, which I also don't love the way many other people do. *hands* Sometimes, that's just how it goes.

I have once again reached the "should I just scrap all of this and start over?" point. I tell myself to just keep writing for now; I can still start over and write a whole new story after the deadline. For now, I need to finish this draft so I can post it.
So I keep writing. For now.

but this weekend i will do some of my to-do list, i swear
30 Jan 2026 16:40Our bin collection day has moved from Wednesday to Thursday so I had to put the bag out on Wednesday night when I got back from choir (I mean, obviously I should have put it out before choir, but I forgot because I'm not used to it yet!). For once I'd actually had to put a bag in my outside bin - having been away at Mum's put me all out of sync, and I had to admit last weekend that I couldn't keep piling things up and needed to start a new bag. So I went out to fetch it to add to the gigantic rubbish pile outside the other block, only to find that it had vanished??!?
I have to assume that one of my neighbours put it out for me, which is obviously very kind of them but also extremely weird, because are they just checking my bin every week or something?? I haven't put anything in there for several months, not since we switched to piling the bags up for collection.
Still, this is much nicer than the disgusting bin neighbours.
This week has been terribly unproductive, although I have listened to an entire audiobook and one and a half radio dramas. Hopefully next week will be better, but I still haven't worked out what to do for my birthday - Mum isn't feeling up to even a short expedition, but I could still go over and/or have lunch with Dad... I'm having dinner with my choir buddy S (also to mark our 22nd anniversary of joining the chorus and making friends!) and then choir, with the second new conductor candidate, so that'll be interesting.
Also have various other social things suggested or partly arranged to follow up on; I need to pull myself together and get them sorted, ideally spaced out so I don't end up with everything happening all at once as usual. I did have lunch with two friends yesterday, so that was good! Socialising with nice people: fun actually, who knew.
NS: Will Eisner’s The Spirit For Sale
30 Jan 2026 09:14The estate of Will Eisner is putting the entire output of Will Eisner that they control through copyright and trademark up for sale, including The Spirit and all of Eisner’s graphic novels and comics.
George Gene Gustines for The New York Times reports (or here):
QuoteUp for grabs are Eisner’s graphic novels, children’s books and instruction manuals for creating comics. Also included in the sale are the many characters he created, most notably the Spirit, the influential masked crime fighter who debuted in 1940 and featured in stories that are noteworthy for their moral realism, mature themes, genre fluidity and inventive page design.
Eisner’s last work featuring the Spirit, a 72-page story from 1996 called “The Spirit Returns,” was never published. It, too, is up for sale.

30 Jan 2026 21:25Characters/Pairings: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Rating: Teen & up
Length: 1782
Content Notes: No AO3 warnings apply
Creator Links: dance_across on AO3
Themes: Crack treated seriously, Friendship, Humor, Pining, Post-canon
Summary: Ray and Fraser discover that someone's been writing stories about them. Slashy, slashy stories.
Reccer's Notes: This is set after canon, during Ray and Fraser's quest. They've become minor celebrities in the wake of the big submarine/terrorists drama and when they briefly hit an outpost of civilization (a motel with internet), Ray checks his email and finds Frannie's sent him a link to a fanfic someone's written, called "Snowfall in Summer". Hilarity then ensues as they decide to read it together, and it leads to Ray making a big decision. The cracky premise is the existence of fanfic about them, and as far as possible, dance_across shows us how that might actually pan out. In a romantic way, of course, with a hopeful ending! It's a lot of fun.

29 Jan 2026 19:33anyway, mainly I bought it because I want to try this no-knead everything bread but didn't want to deal with my 6 qt cast iron dutch oven, which is extremely heavy and also tucked away in a closet somewhere. My plan is to mix it up tomorrow after work since it needs an on-the-counter overnight rise, and then bake it Saturday morning. We'll see how it goes!
I might also make garlic and bread soup again this weekend, and also maybe some version of citrus and soy noodles (it's a ramen recipe but I'm just going to use angel hair instead since I already have it) for dinner tomorrow. Oh, and those orange cranberry scones again - the cranberries are still taking up too much room in my freezer and must be used up!
