Thoughts on the Captain America: the Winter Soldier trailer:

This trailer was highly manipulative with respect to creating a false narrative, as all trailers are. Dialogue that seems to go together was spliced from several conversations or used as voiceover for scenes in which they do not occur. We can watch this, read all the Brubaker, and still not know what's going on. That said....

* There is an international trailer and a US trailer and they are slightly different. The former is organized differently and contains two extra snippets of scenes, only one of which is important for anything other than aesthetics: a Meaningful Glance exchanged between Cap and Agent 13, which could be eyesex (it's Steve and Sharon, completely possible) but is more probably a silent reinforcement considering that it takes place under the nose of Redford's Alexander Pierce. Don't know why they cut this out of the US version.

(The second clip is Cap -- with Natasha in the background -- in a wifebeater coming out of a bathroom, so... yay for potty training.)

* From the original trailer, I was not alone in speculating that the injured party on the surgical table was Fury, especially because it came after the Winter Soldier blowing his bullet-riddled car to kingdom come. But from the second, we can see that he survives that with only cosmetic damage, which makes the next likely candidate Sam Wilson, who does have at least one confrontation with the Winter Soldier.

* Which leads to the next question: who is the body under the shroud that Natasha is saying farewell to? Is it Sam? Is it Bucky? Is it Steve? Is it someone else we will be introduced to as someone who means something to Natasha, since she's not really likely to mourn over the body of Random SHIELD Agent Who Died in One of the Many Battles? A cameo for someone else (Clint?) to be undeaded by Wanda in Age of Ultron? Or not undeaded?

I will be crushed if it is Sam. I will be possibly disconsolate if it's Bucky unless it's the fakeout from Winter Soldier, although it's going to be unintentionally funny if Bucky dies (fake or otherwise) every movie. I will be vindicated if it's Steve, I suppose, although I had him going in Age of Ultron. But, hey, they've got a Wanda, she can undead him if she wants?

* [livejournal.com profile] doqz expressed concern that they are excising the Bucky/Nat history, but I didn't read that information exchange between Natasha and Steve that way at all. I think they cut out the part where she says she knows him, although I'm sure she is the one leaving out the part about that knowledge being biblical because she did that in the books, too. In the comics, the Winter Soldier was an urban legend and nobody figured it out until the very end because they didn't have the computers and the processing power to run that kind of massive facial recognition matching out of a half-dozen pictures of quarter-profile and bad angles and worse lighting. And, of course, nobody would have believed such a thing because of the time span involved.

* The effects are clearly going to be awesome, but I wanna know about the fights. The Winter Soldier-Steve, yes, and Natasha kicking ass because she's out of bubblegum and the elevator scene with Crossbones, but Batroc the Leaper is here and I expect something awesome out of that.

Which is not to say that the Winter Soldier punching a hole in the windshield and ripping out the steering wheel and running off isn't sexy as hell. I am really, really looking forward to him being a sleek, unstoppable force of destruction. My competence kink has no moral compass.

* We pretty much got confirmation Bucky gets his memories back in this movie (as opposed to Cap3 or Age of Ultron) because of the first-person perspective of his metal hand. I think the Zodiac Key stands in for the Tesseract here, which is fine. So long as "Remember who you are" is there, of course. :)

* I freely admit that I missed the Ed Brubaker cameo because I was busy staring at Sebastian Stan's waxed chest. But, yay for Bru.

* I don't think the lack of Redford in the second half of the trailer is an accident. I am still going to suspect that while they're calling him Alexander Pierce, Dell Rusk might be closer to the mark. We shall see.

* Thoughts?

First, I feel like this trailer release was very timely because I just finished reading Revenant (review to follow because there's a lot to chew on but basically it was *fantastic*!) And then after that there's a new trailer release!!!

I'm hoping the person under the cloth is not Sam:( I am hoping its a Winter Soldier fake out. I didn't even know that Ed Brubaker was there!

It was very brief but I got the sense that Natasha knew who the Winter Soldier was personally but was playing things close.
