The first Chanukah candles are lit on Wednesday, 27 November.

(US) Thanksgiving is Thursday, 28 November.

Holy carp! And other religious fish. I did not realize this until just now.

Apparently this happened in 1888 and will happen again precisely never. (Or near enough.)

Planning the latke party just got much easier and much harder.... (Anyone have a reliable sweet potato latke recipe?)

I'm sure I saw a magazine article somewhere with suggestions about how to merge your Chanukah and Thanksgiving celebrations, although oddly enough deep-fried turkey was not among them.

I'm working my way through this month's supply of food magazines now. Food and Wine did a massive Thanksgiving thing, but no Chanukah mention at all and a lot of their Thanksgiving was improved by pork. I hope Bon Appetit and Saveur have a suggestion.

I found the thing I saw -- buzzfeed, and not all that practical, I think -- but good luck with the magazines. In grad school my roommates and I once cooked a whole Bon Appetit thanksgiving spread. It was very good, and involved roughly five pounds of butter and a gallon of cream.

Butter and cream and fat are the secrets to why James Beard is so brilliant. What Paula Deen makes crass and ridiculous, he made refined and delicious. And artery-hardening.

I clip recipes from all three food mags I subscribe to, but I mostly read them for entertainment -- Saveur is a travel magazine with recipes, I don't have the budget to indulge in most of what F&W suggests, and under the current editorial direction, BA's theme is "eating! You're doing it wrong!" and a shamelessly desperate fawning over hipster meccas Williamsburg and Portland.
