domarzioneI saw it last night, have some thoughts that will be burped out in random order as I organize them. Starting with the end of the movie first:
We are meant to believe that Steve went back in time to the 1940s to spend his life with Peggy. Bucky knew this was going to happen, hence the “I’ll miss you” before 2023 Steve goes.
I’m pretty sure that’s what we are supposed to think happened.
But.
Steve going back to his own past presents a problem: there is already a Steve there.
So how does this work out?
Assume the following:
(a) Steve does not go back before Bucky’s fall.
(b) Steve does not go back before his fall. [I wrote that one already]
(c) Steve goes back at some point after his crash and before the events of Agent Carter. He turns up with a wild but plausible story of survival and rescue. A nation rejoices.
Then:
(1) Steve is not leaving his younger self, whom we’ll call Capsicle, in the ice.
(2) Steve is not leaving Bucky in the hands of HYDRA.
(3) Peggy will help him rescue both.
(4) Steve and Capsicle are not going to fight or barter over Peggy because she would kill them both. While Bucky ate popcorn.
(5) Peggy, presented with her Steve, Capsicle, and the man he becomes in the future…. is not likely to choose Steve over Capsicle. They are different men and she only loves one of them, although she certainly is predisposed to affinity for the other. [Keeping both is not an option in this scenario. You want to write it, go ahead.]
(6) Steve and Bucky wish them well and head off to live off the grid, “like hobos,” per Mark Waid’s Steve in Man Out of Time when he wanted to do just this.
(7) The Steve we see dancing with Peggy in the front room is Capsicle, not 2023 Steve.
(8) The wedding ring on Old Steve’s hand is from someone else. An exercise left to the reader.
