I actually had to take care that I didn't accidentally reproduce too much from the SGA guys. :)
I do recommend the Punisher series, if you have Netflix. It doesn't have a ton of prerequisites, it's very un-superhero-y and it's a thriller rather than "Frank goes around gunning people down." I mean, he does that, too, but it's actually a wonderfully nuanced performance by Jon Bernthal.
