stuff about stuff
13 Oct 2013 20:05* The Snowpiercer cuts are real and they're fury-inducing and they will cover the entire English-speaking population of the world, South Africa included. At this point, I am half-hoping that The Weinstein Company is doing this as a marketing ploy, that they're going to restore the full movie at the last moment and expect us all to flock to it in appreciation. And you know what? If they do, I will. However, the sad reality is that the cuts are most likely permanent and I won't give TWC a penny until I can buy a copy of the legit version. This movie is doing gangbusters in Korea, making over $62 million and having been seen by more than a quarter of the entire population -- which means a much greater percentage of the actual movie-going public. It's clearly okay as-is.
* Was gifted with a free day at NYComicCon today. Sat in on the Women of Marvel Comics panel, which was, I think, affirming overall. It was an all-female panel and the discussion was not only about female characters, but also women in all levels of the production process, from editorial to creative, and their influence and their hurdles and their goals. And Kelly Sue DeConnick's manifesto for the future of women in comics (and women in general). It had an entirely different tone than most panels at cons, a freeing one, really. The nerdiest question was asked by a gal in a Ms. Marvel buttfloss costume, which I think says it all: no defensiveness, no justifications, no shaming, just gals (and a surprising number of men, a plurality unaccompanied by any women) being interested in comics, in women in comics, and all that that entails.
And then I spent three hours wandering the exhibition floor with an eye on consumerism. I only bought items on my wishlist and stuck to the $5 TPB bins and not the 50% Off bins, which is a far cry from my gluttonous days of yore. There were only two exceptions: a near-mint with-dust-jacket hardcover copy of JLA: League of One, which is out of print and hard to come by at a reasonable price and $10 is a steal. It's one of my favorite JLA stories and is the source for this iconic Wonder Woman image. And a still-in-shrink-wrap copy of the Jenkins/Rivera Mythos hardcover trade for $7 because I love Rivera's art. I went by the Image booth and they were out of the Lazarus trade, which I would have bought and not just because Greg Rucka was standing there, apparently completely unrecognized.
* Operation Codename: Flambé (i.e. the sequel to Freezer Burn and Thaw) is being outlined. I am slogging through pages of emotion and feelings and, as anyone who has ever read my fic knows, these are not things I enjoy writing about in depth or at length and here I am doing both. I hope it works out.
* I signed up for the pinch-hitter list for Yuletide, which gives me flexibility. And no guarantee of writing anything, granted, but I didn't have the energy to sit down and think about what I wanted to receive as part of the formal exchange, so it's fine.
* I think I might have given up on Agents of SHIELD already. I'll be happy to go back to it when it gets interesting, but I don't need to watch the growing pains.
